Deze wonderschone novelle (ruim 200 jaar oud!) is een klein kunstwerkje. Ookal is het taalgebruik soms lichtelijk archaïsch, dat neemt niet weg dat je meteen sympathie voelt voor de ongelukkige "graaf" Peter. Want hoe ellendig om geen schaduw te hebben!

I appreciated the reworking of the theme of "the deal with the devil" in this story, and I also loved the fairytale-esque elements and how they were framed with more adult themes. However, the story seems to be heading towards a specific conclusion and a resolution of the protagonist living without a shadow, but then it veers away from that and presents readers with a rather rushed and confusing conclusion. The story was overall enjoyable but it became too philosophical at the end and the conclusion was inexplicable.

Most of this is great, but then you reach the final two chapters and think: what the hell happened there?
