This book was outstanding. Steven Erikson has long forgotten how to disappoint. I loved the characters, the arcs, the twists, the turns. I teared up, I laughed, I cheered, my mouth fell open in shock. I was heartbroken and elated and awed. The marines got me, as they do.

"Do you give a shit?"

Yeah man, I do, and it brings me some peace and hope and maybe a little bit of clarity about the world to know that I'm not the only one.

Definitely will be in my top three of Malazan books, it was brilliant. Despite a slow, philosophy-heavy start, this had a great pacing throughout and the build up of background tension was brilliantly executed.
Of course, the best thing about this were the characters and I had so many little things I loved: Benger & Mockra's Curse; Gruff; STILLWATER; Anyx Fro's Creature; Oam's demon; and just ALL THE MAZALANS. There were some really interesting themes brought up as well with the other races/species that were brought in (I'm trying to give away as little as possible) and it all came together really nicely. Heavy on the marine humour which is the best, but balanced by some big themes and metaphors.
The ending, while not as huge as some of the finales of the main series, was still very impactful and cinematic - some heartbreaking endings here and I think will create massive shifts in the dynamics between some groups. I am very intrigued to read the next one (whenever it comes out)!

Erikson is my favorite author and I expected a great book. Hell, I expected a masterpiece. I didn't expect ... this. I'm so completely blown away I can see my own particles.

I haven't laughed this much while reading a book for a long long time, but I was also on the verge of tears so many times. I love these characters so much. Most of them are new characters but I feel I've known them all my life. This is another tale with Erikson's amazing social commentary, infinite compassion and jaw-dropping character work.

This is one of the best books I've read in my life.

Brilliant. As usual. One. Just one author who never ever disappoints. Malazan Marines and their humor and attitudes, new well introduced characters, new mystery etc. A must have for the Malazan fan.
