this book is really not very good at all but it stuck with me for years and I wrote so many knockoff versions of it in high school it has a special place in my heart.
The book is honestly an easy read but that’s just about it. It’s my first James Patterson book and it was very disappointing. The book is called the Lake House but they’re only actually at the lake house towards the end of the book?? I didn’t feel like the fictional aspects were properly built on, I can’t really explain what resurrection is. I feel like the author puts the burden on the reader to figure out these parts. So a person’s entire organs are “shucked” and somehow when transplanted into another being, their life is prolonged? I needed more explanation on this, on the clones, on Kane’s robot wife (I think).
The book also appears to be a teenage romance which was annoying and not what I expected , even if the bird kids are meant to be “older” than normal human children, it’s weird to read about them having sex and even a twelve year old giving birth(or laying eggs)
The ending scenes also didn’t make sense, the scenes at the hospital were really rushed, the entire book built on this showdown and yet it’s the shortest part of the book. And Kane also breaking into the lake house was just unnecessary and didn’t even pique my interest for more than two minutes before it was over.
Really disappointed with the book.

This book is weird. Little things bothered me. I kept being told the kids were geniuses...but never saw evidence. Why are they super strong if they have hollow bones like birds? With a wingspan of 9 ft, how are they always zooming up staircases and around rooms?
I know this is suppose to be Max's story prior to the her series and was written first but there are things that do not match up.

Another terrifying biological experiment is taking place. Max becomes the prized possession.
The plot was very interesting. Imagine a world where experiments take place on animals and humans, unbelievable right?
I quite like the characters, especially Max. She was feisty and smart, but at times still showed her youth.
I thought there was a lot of the story taken up with love interests. This could’ve been a much better thriller than what I was led to believe.
I also didn’t realise it was the second in the duology but this did not detract from the book at all. I found it easy enough to read on its own.
The setting was well described and I could feel myself soaring into the air with these winged children.
As always, James Patterson‘s books are easy to read with lovely short, punchy chapters.
It wasn’t a book I would necessarily read, but I found it in the safe of the hotel I was staying in.
