A hefty world building book with the classic Sarah J Maas whirlwind last 100 pages. As always it grips you at the end to keep you interested (even if the big twist was clear from like a million miles away. Nehemiah’s death was by far the most upsetting thing (seriously??? The one person of color??? And also the only one with some sense???) . Mort was a funny edition. You can also tell this is early in her writing career because her pulls are not disguised as much- Baba Yellowlegs for a Baba Yaga stand in? Chaol is still teetering on iffy for me, while Dorian is fascinating and lovable (even knowing he’s clearly not for Celeana/Aelin ). Celeana is somehow the dumbest smart person in this story. It was great to finally see some assassin come out- for such a tragic and gory life she’s wildly well adjusted (or a psychopath!), even if her age, her notoriety, and her disposition all point in wildly different directions. The king is not much better- touted as super clever but like doesn’t notice all this going under his nose? Kaltain was almost sympathetic in this book. Rolland was not. I’m intrigued by her fae background and what losing magic was like for everyone- from what’s shared it’s like it just stopped. Did she get lucky and stuck in human form? What’s it like to lose that part of yourself? Speaking of Aelin- you’re telling me that all these lineage books are brought up and you don’t expect me to guess she’s the lost princess? Her being Fae is more surprising and that was not surprising at all- she can open portals and had a little too much power last book. I also need to know what the creature was in the labyrinth/hall/tower. Who were they before? Do we know them? Where are all Aelin’s scars and how does she hide them? Archer was not a shock, just a bit annoying. Aelin was for sure overreacting at hating Chaol. I’m intrigued about life with the Fae coming up (and if they have magic!) but hate that Chaol made these choices for her. Also at this point I’m hoping and thinking that the king only has one Wyrd key overall this was entertaining but not as gripping or satisfying. It’s a perfect middle of the series book.

Was feeling 3 stars and then the last half of this book all hell broke loose
