wow wow wow, what a book. black buck was a rollercoaster of emotions — mostly anger and stress — from the perspective of someone who was willing to sacrifice it all to get ahead. it’s a great satire of corporate/tech culture and the racism that exists in those spaces and i enjoyed reading it.

i will say though that the some of the narrative/writing style wasn’t really for me. i get that it’s meant to be a satire from a more immature perspective, but parts of it made me roll my eyes. regardless, it was a pretty quick read so i would recommend it.

I don't know if this was hard to get through because I didn't like it, because of the use of the r-word, or because I was in somewhat of a book hangover after a five star read. 🤷🏽‍♀️ I do, however, know that it was not for me. 🙅🏽‍♀️

I thought I was going to get "The Office" like satire, but there was no point in time where I laughed. Instead, I was hit with microagressions and white supremacy that were believable and exhausting.

To add, I vehemently disliked the use of the r-word. I KNOW it was because the character was a racist, sexist, ableist P.O.S. but in my opinion, it is never okay. There is never a right time for it. 🙅🏽‍♀️ It also felt like a self help book to me, and unless they're research based - I'm not interested in those either. Lastly, mental health is important to me (I couldn't have gotten through 2020 or 2021 without my therapist) and I feel like this book made light of it.

What a wild ride this was. I devoured it quickly but it was also brutal to read at times, watching a train wreck kind of vibe. The first sections were utterly riveting and the later ones less so, but I was invested enough in the plot by then to keep going.
Suggested song pairing: Flying Monkeys by Jay Stone

Too many uses of the R word as a negative.

I've decided after reading 100 pages that this is not for me and to DNF. This book had so much potential and I liked the concept. I went into this knowing that it was satire but there were points where it just missed. I ended up giving up on this book due to the use of ableist slurs which were not challenged in the book. I'm disappointed by this as for the first time I got to read about a character with Tourettes (there are few books out there with characters with Tourette's and it's nice to be represented in a book); the representation wasn't bad it was a bit stereotypical but it was noted that not everyone with Tourette's swears which I appreciated. It annoys me as it ruined the decent disability representation for me by then going and using abelist slurs later in the book; it felt like one step forwards and two steps back. This book is definitely a love or dislike book, and unfortunately I disliked it.

What I Liked:
  • Everything. Seriously, this book was incredible.
  • This was SUCH a good look into racism and ableism in the workforce, as well as a good picture of how greed and money can change someone.
  • This book made me uncomfortable and made me think, for all of the right reasons.
  • I HATED the characters I was supposed to hate, and loved the ones I was supposed to love. The author rounded his characters out beautifully.
  • The narrator of this one was FABULOUS. One of the best narrators I've listened to.

You Should Read If You Like:
  • If you're working towards antiracism, I highly suggest this one.
  • DEFINITELY look at the TWs before picking this one up.
