Cute, but not entirely relatable for me because I don't know anything about the five stages of courting. (Neither does my mom.) As it was, I had a hard time connecting with the characters. The writing style also felt overly simplistic and unnecessarily descriptive at times, almost like it was YA/NA, which didn't help.
This was a good book. Probably more of a 3.5, but I always round up.
Evan meets Dalisay Ramos at work where she’s just moved from Manila to take a senior editor position with a travel magazine. He’s immediately struck by her beauty, style, travel experience and he asks her out pretty quickly. This turns out to be the wrong move. Dalisay is very in touch with her Philippine culture and a potential suitor should make a real effort. She turns him down flat.
When he tells his friends-two of whom are also Filipino- they let him know she expected more from him. He and Dalisay end up making a bet that he won’t go through the 5 Stages of Courtship. At this point, it’s literally just a bet without a real romance on the line. I think, gentle reader, you know this ain’t gonna stay a bet.
There’s so much going on in this book: there are gay side characters, cultural disparity, and some steamy times.
It’s really interesting reading about the courting and why these acts are important. It’s also very important to see how this tight-knit family merges their values into their new American life.
All in all, a good book worth reading.
I received an ALC from #netgalley. All thoughts are mine alone.

This was cute! Thank you NetGalley, RBmedia, and Recorded Books for access to the ALC in exchange for an honest review.
I love a book with dual POV but the narration was only by a female narrator. She was great! But I wish we got dual narrators. I loved learning about these five stages of courting and it was really interesting. I like that we got both POVs of the main characters during this journey from two different cultural backgrounds. The stages just felt a little rushed and then it seemed like we were already through all of them but the book was only at 50%? The pacing just felt a little off in that it both felt rushed and too long. It also felt a little repetitive even though the grand gesture was cute and made a bit more of an impact it was just…I don’t know maybe just the structure of the book made the pacing feel off and repetitive. It’s hard to say without spoiling. Overall I really enjoyed learning about the Filipino traditions but didn’t really feel the chemistry between Dalisay and Evan.

This was book was great to read as someone who is half Filipino. So I understand part of the family aspect of this story. It was cute up until a certain part of the story where I kind of thought it should have ended, but there was a whole lot more that wasn’t needed. Somehow a lot of drama was brought into all of this and I’m sitting here reading and asking why???? But then they tie it all back and I guess it makes sense. Read this for yourself.
