Sarah Keate opens with a letter that she is fast becoming known as that nurse who death follows. But she doesn't hesitate to go out when she receives a call at two-thirty in the morning. A man has been shot, cleaning a gun she's told, in the shoulder. But he implies that it was something far more sinister. And when he ends up dead, this time the intent is obvious, well, Sarah is anxious to leave but ends up staying with the family. A family that is aristocratic, but very odd. Even the doctor in the case is a relation.
