As a historian professionally it is rare for me to find history books I want to read in my after hours, but Natalie Zemon Davis writes with such clarity, empathy, and historical imagination that letting her whisk me away to the 16th century was a rare pleasurable treat over the Christmas break. Highly recommend to anyone interested in a brief, immersive and thought provoking trip to 16th century France, and especially to anyone curious about what can be done with creative historical methodologies.

If I had read this before I definitely would have selected more early modern options. This has pride of place as one of my favourite history books. It's short and accessible, read it.

Absolutely insane true event. I liked the writing style. I listened to it as an audio book and it was easily digestible. Recommend for people that want to know more about the morals and law of 16th century France, or anyone who wants to know weird historical trivia.

An interesting study on a case of stolen identity.
