I really hated reading this book, but I can also see why it’s appreciated by many. The big issue for me is that this book was recommended to me by a superior, but reading this was frustrating because it made me see ways in which my organization isn’t practicing these principles, but I’m not in a position to make necessary changes. So yeah, this was a pretty frustrating experience.

I read this because everyone talks about this book and quotes this book and even some of the phrases have become quite common in reference to the concepts of this book. So it turns out I’m quite familiar with a lot of the concepts. And having been on teams that followed this, I can say that it works. I’ve also been on teams that fell away from this and that also works… to no longer be great.
So it takes a strategic manager who is thinking through this type of thinking to be great. A level 5 if you will. But I’m not even sure if it’s following these exact principles or if just always looking to improve would do it. Because there are a lot of people who are happy to just sit back and only work to keep people relatively happy so they don’t quit.
