Graphic: Body horror and Child death
Moderate: Animal death and Suicide
Minor: Suicide attempt
note the warnings for suicide and suicide attempt refer to different instances: a suicide in the past is significant to the mystery and Penric makes a very brief reference to his attempt at suicide before Masquerade in Lodikimu's review against another edition

When I picked it up I actually thought I had read it before as it was so similar to the beginning of another in the series. I thought this was going to be a horror, but it ended up being tragic and sad.
Not my favourite in the series.

This is by far the darkest of the Penric and Desdemona books
