An easy read, cozy fantasy romance with enjoyable writing. It is predictable with an annoyingly unnecessary plot point near the end, but no strong feelings.

The audiobook is seriously one of the best audiobooks I've ever listened to. The voice actor is phenomenal and does a great job of conveying emotions and differentiating between character's voices. I would recommend this book in any form to most people, but am always hyping up the audiobook specifically.
The romance was a slow burn that builds tension, but doesn't take so horribly long that you're shaking your book begging these two grown adults to just kiss already. The two MCs have amazing banter and work their way to romance naturally.
This book had an interesting plot (a man lives in a sword?? love it!), great side characters, and low-medium stakes. The majority of the book is spent travelling, and I felt like the last quarter of the book was a little bit rushed, but not enough to ruin the story at all!

This is one of those low-medium stakes stories that a lot of people like to put into the 'cozy fantasy' category, but I have a hard time calling a story 'cozy' if any of the characters are put in perilous situations.
Read the content warnings on this one for sure to keep yourself safe!

(If you plan on reading this book, please make sure to look at the content warnings, as it opens up with some really heavy topics right out the gate!)

While there were some aspects of the book and romance between the main characters that weren't for me, I genuinely enjoyed it! The narrator of the audiobook does a great job with the character voices though, that really stood out to me - especially Sarkis! Du be warned though, if you do listen to the audiobook version, that this book has a few 'spicy' scenes in it. Those generally catch me off guard in audiobooks, so I thought it might be helpful to others if they knew beforehand.

Spoilers for the end of the book ahead:
I loved the last fight (in chapter 56-58 I believe?) so so much! Halla's role in general over the ending chapters was great and the dynamic between her and Zale adds so much, too. :)

Content warning: suicidal ideation, violence/gory, threat of forced marriage & pregnancy

I thought the concept was interesting, and the ending lends itself to a possible sequel in the future. I did enjoy seeing more of how the White Rat operates outside of the context with the paladins. It’s pretty similar to the Saint of Steel series, and most of my criticisms from that series could apply to this book. If you plan to check out any books in the White Rat universe, I would probably suggest to space them out, otherwise they get pretty repetitive—although, I haven’t read the Clocktaur books so here’s to hoping they’re a little different? Overall, I still enjoyed it, and will be reading the last two currently available in the universe…just maybe in a month or two.
