Highly enjoyable book; definitely a Regency-set tribute to Sherlock Holmes, which I feel the author could perhaps have done more with. Surprisingly heavy on plot, which did drag a bit during all the courtroom scenes, and meant that the denouement seemed a little overdone.

Eleanor is trying to escape to her sister's house to get away from her abusive husband. After being caught once, she exactingly plans this escape. She meets Sir Hillary St. John, friend of her sister's new husband. She has a pretty silly plan to escape notice by her husband. Hil has to keep her safe when that plan goes wrong. There is a lot of implied spousal abuse in the book, to both Eleanor and her sister. Casts an overall pall over the story. But love always overcomes an abusive husband.

I have not read the previous books in this series and this book can absolutely be read as a stand alone.  Samantha Kane has a fabulous writing style.  All the characters in this book are very charming. Hil is quite the alpha man.  I love the unique relationship he and Eleanor have.  They both know what they want and have no problem talking about it, especially during their intimate moments. It's fantastic! I also love how the story builds up to a crescendo and then in great mystery novel style, comes crashing down with a scene that has everyone gasping.  I can't wait to read the other books in this fantastic series.
