So many magical creatures! It's a fun escape and a great read for a younger audience. I think I read it at a time where I had a lot else going on so it was challenging to keep track of all the creatures and bond when only reading 15 mins a night and fighting droopy eyes. If I had read it at a different time I think I would have enjoyed it more.

Not too complex but quite a mission they have to take you on. A smidgen predictable but then surprising moments, as well. I do wish some of the mystical creatures had better, me distinguishable names. Loved the grumpy cast of characters and want to read another or maybe this one again in a couple years. Reminded me of Tress of the Emerald Sea.

It was promising but towards the middle/end I was sooo bored I had to force myself to read and started to skip a lot of paragraphs (didn't want to DNF at like 65%). It's not the pace that's boring, it's actually very fast paced. I just didn't care about the story that much and I found it a little confusing for a middle-grade book. The characters seemed a bit shallow. I liked the message behind it and even underlined some passages, but that's about it.

I wanted to like this more than I did. There are incredibly poignant moments, as well as passages of imagery that convey a sense of wonder.  I loved the optimistic, though believable bittersweet lessons in the book. Despite all of those things, I didn't connect as much with the characters as I wanted, and this was a bit like reading the Odyssey, insofar as being a string of encounters with mythological elements in a way that feels like an action movie gone slightly too long.
