I want to spend more time in the world that Katherine built. It is magical and beautiful and heartbreaking. You will laugh, you will cry, it’s beautiful. The illustrations are beautiful. This book is a masterpiece!

This totally deserves the hype. A heart wrenching children’s story in the vein of Narnia or the Golden Compass. Mal and Christopher are on a quest to save the world’s magic and restore the Immortal to power. They meet all kinds of strange and wonderful friends along the way, have to do impossible tasks, and have to face all kinds of terrible choices. This isn’t a kiddie book that pulls its punches (the dead stay dead, much to my 8yo’s chagrin) but every loss is deeply felt and adequately mourned and the overall message — that life is worth living for all its hardships, for all its beauty — is just so needed in these trying times. Absolutely loved it.
