I read this because my 10 year old said I HAD to. He loved it and couldn't stop talking about it. Had I read this as a 10-12 year old, I also would have been sucked into another world, struggling to keep my feet in this realm!

I was so disappointed in this book…I just knew I would love it and I didn’t. It’s very clearly inspired by C.S. Lewis; some of the phrases and whimsical dialogue sound torn from Narnia. But it is lacking the heart that you find in a series like Narnia.
This book is just a thrown together series of small tasks with a taste here and there of epic in-world myth. They repetitively go from one place to the next completing their tasks, and you forget the places and people they meet quickly because the characters and places don’t stick around long enough to make an impression before they are off to the next one.
Mal and Christopher’s characters are not well explored and are at times confusing. Some deep losses to the characters seem to make no impact on them, while others do. Mal makes a huge decision once faced with certain information that makes no sense for what I understand of her.
There were several supposedly emotional moments in this book that had no impact on me because I did not feel I knew these characters.

that fact that I have to wait till August of next year to read the second book is actually going to drive me insane, so if that's any show of just how amazing this story is, there you go! Almost felt like I was healing my inner child reading this, love a good fantasy/adventure novel, and this was just that and more ♡
Jag har för mig att jag verkligen uppskattade denna bok. Lyssnade på den som ljudbok och tyckte om uppläsaren. VÄldigt bra och fin samt spännade! Kanske blir mer fantasy framöver :)

this was such a cute book! loved the writing style and the pictures. looking forward to book 2!
I almost gave it a 4.5 because there was a slightly mushy middle, but I don't even care. Asher and I read it as a read aloud, and we both loved it! Mal and Christopher are beloved protagonists, Nighthand, Ratwin, and Irian are perfect sidekicks, and the many "impossible creatures" add so much color and fun to the book. It's technically a middle grade book, but it's also perfect for adults who need a palate cleanser from harder books and who want to believe in the good of the world.
