Wow what a book to start the year off. I could not stop listening to it and I usually one listen to audio books at work. I think this stems from one of my favorite novels being the Grapes of Wrath. Being someone who was raised in California, by a dad who is very active in unions, and a mother so eerily similar to Elsa this really hit home for me and I was in tears. Such an amazing book.

Once again KH hits with incredible story telling with a powerful and emotional back drop. I have given her other books all 5☆ but I think I have to bump this down a little . I was both invested in the story and found myself avoiding it because it was such a downer. The ending was very powerful and I even cried a little. Very moving. Very stressful that it feels like we are heading back to this .

It’s a book set in the Great Depression, following a family from the Dust Bowl in the Texas panhandle to the shanty towns in California. A terrible time is had by all, but it’s an excellent read with threads of hope throughout.

While this takes place in the 1930s, it is a timely read for the year 2024. This deals with issues such as the exploitation of vulnerable people under capitalism, the importance of unionizing/advocating for employees, the deportation and mistreatment of immigrants/migrants, as well as discrimination towards people of different races and classes.

Kristin Hannah tends to write books that take place over several years and are a snapshot of people living their lives.  I thoroughly enjoyed following the story throughout the years and loved seeing how the two main characters grew. The setting was very well researched and had me super invested. I even found myself learning a lot about the time period.

Ultimately, a very touching story highlighting issues that are still very important today! Highly suggest keeping tissues on hand.

most people seemed to really enjoy it so the problem isnt with the book ig. it's just not my type of book 🙁

Update: so I got bored and stuck in a place where I had nothing else to do and no wifi, and this was the only book on my phone. I ended up finishing it and it was actually better written than it seemed from the first couple of chapters? not sure how I feel about this tho, I don't  think I like it very much.
