I finally tried a Louise Penny book!

I quite liked it in a lot of ways. It had just the tone I want in a mystery--a bit more serious than the cheesy side of cozies, but without being gory and graphic for no reason. I also feel like I understand a lot more about Canadian culture and the tensions therein than I did before.

I did guess the murderer, but only slightly ahead of the reveal, so basically just in time to be satisfying to my pride without actually losing much mystery. :-)

The pagan ritual aspect to the story did make me uncomfortable, so I'll be reading the next book to see if that tones down or not, and may or may not continue the series based on that.

There is a homosexual couple in this book, including a minor plot line about how they are unkindly treated.

I have seen so many good reviews of this book and they were all accurate - it’s just lovely. A cosy mystery, with beautiful comments on life and human nature. Maybe a teeny bit slow for me in places but I think that was intentional, because it lulls you into the pace of the village it’s set in.

2019:  Found a "new" series for me to read!

2022:  Came back to this again after the reading the first nine in the series.   It's just as good as the first time and so fun to see details I didn't know the first time through.

I reread Still Life this year and it holds up. It's a very good cozy mystery set in Three Pines, Quebec, where a local woman has been murdered. On a reread, knowing who the killer was made me look for the clues about them, and it was still a surprise
