The focus of this book is desire, this desire obtains different shapes but usually there's a pursue of power involved. The author wrote about humans relationship with desire incredibly.
The characters are lovable at times but with most of them you are gonna feel annoyed too, feel like they have went too far. You both understand them and want to stop them.
The way the author writes about gender is outstanding, I was surprised by how much I related to this book as a genderqueer person. There's also some representation in the ace spectrum that I think was done well considering how little space it had.
Overall really recommend this read, and have to end this review by praising the writing in this novel.

I’m honestly speechless. This was one of the most elaborate, sweeping, and epic books I have ever read.
I was hoping for a little bit more fantasy elements, but with how amazing this book was I honestly didn’t mind at all.
This book has it all: politics, complex characters, character growth, sapphic romance, mystery, inspiration, beautiful action sequences, and plot twists.

While I enjoyed the characters and the ways that the author explored gender expressions and identities in this book, the plot lost me several times. I'm learning it's hard for me to pay attention to narratives that revolve around war. I feel like I would have liked this more as a television show or movie. Some aspects were hard to visualize for me. Not sure if I'll read the sequel.

I really enjoyed this book and especially the character of Zhu Chongba. There was a little more more discussion of strategy/politics than usually interests me, and sometimes I got the characters confused (honestly because I'm white and not accustomed to Chinese names, so that's no fault of the author, the characters were all very distinct and well written). The moments of the characters' internal narrative and the interactions between them were compelling and believable. The queer subplot of this story is one of my favorite probably ever. The descriptions of the experience of attraction and dysphoria felt so representative and nuanced. I highly recommend the audio, the narrator was great and it was helpful to hear character and place names pronounced correctly.
