As a psychology student I have heard a lot about the Milgram studies; an attempt to understand the reasoning behind German soldiers actions during the Nazi regime. However there is obviously more to it than obedience levels dictated in statistics. This book takes you into their minds but also into the reactions of outsiders looking in; how do we handle such a situation? Referring to them as just evil people is far too simple in my view. But, on the other hand, it is easier to think that way. You cannot justify the Holocaust but understanding the minds of the enforcers is not that easy. It is something that interests me.
The Reader is a very thought provoking, captivating read which handles the subject matter very well. I couldn't stop reading. Literally, I didn't move from the sofa once.

I had to read this book for my Holocaust class. I wouldn't recommend it on the basis of its explicit physical relationship of a boy with a woman twice his age but would recommend it on the symbolism of their relationship being one of the vulnerable German people to the controlling Nazi party. It is filled with moral questions that the author doesn't answer for you but encourages you to think about when Hannah asks "What would you have done?". What would you have done if you had been there during the Holocaust and what will you do in your own life?
I watched the movie before I read the book. The movie stayed very true to the book and didn't leave out anything important. I really enjoyed the descriptions that the author used and painted a vivid picture of the narrator's relationship with Hanna. There was a lag in the plot after the trial, but overall, it was a short, well-written novel.
----
Beautiful, but sad! The book is thought-provoking. "Am I guilty when I love a perpetrator?; When and how much should/can one interfere in regard to another human's life (choices)?", etc.
Another interesting question is how all sorts of events (be they small or big) change, steer, improve and/or worsen life.

Really enjoyed the first part, the latter two parts kind of dragged.
