This book touches on some very interesting topics relating to Nazi Germany. The story is about an illiterate Nazi concentration camp guard but it told by her much, much younger lover. I thought it was pretty good, especially since I have just recently visited Auschwitz, the camp discussed in the book.

This book lead to contemplation of many things: guilt, trust, the law, how history informs the law… When I think back at the way I felt after seeing Auschwitz, how angry and horrified and sad I felt, I don’t know how to respond to the character of Hanna. I understand the guilt of Michael and how in some ways this is supposed to be the collective guilt, not just of the German people, but other countries where anti-semitism existed or still exists (or at least that is how I interpreted it).

I really enjoyed this and read it all in one day. Sometimes that just means I'm on a sort of sugar high, but like a book high. Hopefully this is really a good book and I don't have to come back on at another time and take stars away. Plus, I have the DVD and I'm making Greg watch it on Sunday. I love reading books before seeing the movie. And I love Kate Winslet.
