My book club chose this title over Alas, Babylon and On the Beach . (I voted for Alas, Babylon , which I read my senior year in high school.)

When this book came out, my students gave it lukewarm reviews, so I wasn't keen to read it. It wasn't as bad as I thought. It is a person vs. nature plot, and the conflicts aren't as riveting as some of the other young adult novels with post-cataclysmic events. It's a good introduction to what matters and what is needed in dire situations. Many events in this book paralleled what I saw as Hurricane Sandy occurred, which demonstrated the novel's relevancy.

Although the book wasn't a nail-biter, edge of my seat thriller, I thought it was worth having in a high school classroom/ library.

Favorite quotations:
"I guess I always felt even if the world came to an end, McDonald's would still be open" (46).

"There were names of people I could have looked up: kids I went to summer camp with,...and old friends from elementary school who moved to New York or California or Florida. But I didn't try to find them. They weren't everyday parts of my life anyway, and it feels wrong somehow to find out if they're dead when I didn't think about them while they were living" (59).

This book... bad science, annoyingly whiny main character. The whole premise is ridiculous and everything that happens after the moon event equally unreal. I wish the author had taken some time to do a little bit of research. I'm not even going to recommend it to my teenager.

An interesting story about life on Earth after the moon is struck out of orbit and closer to Earth by an asteroid. The event proves to be catastrophic, changing the climate on Earth and leading to a bevy of natural disasters. Miranda chronicles the events that follow in her journal describing what happens to her family and the small Pennsylvania town she lives in and how life her life is changed forever.

Read it in one day and still crying
Didn’t enjoy the open ending tbh but may be it’s for the better
P.s. I really want to go to a grocery store and stack up everything in hundreds

What was supposed to be an amazing fireworks in the sky event and no big deal, according to the physicists, astronomers, and other so-called experts turns out to be a major earth altering event. The asteroid is a much denser object than anyone had calculated for and it throws the moon out of its orbit around the earth. As a result, the increased gravitational pull causes tsunamis, increases volcanic activity, and a global climate change. Life changes almost overnight for Miranda, her mom, and brothers, Jonny and Matt.

Brilliantly crafted, this book masterfully weaves science fiction with profound philosophical insights, delivering a story that lingers long after the final page. One of the most compelling reads I've encountered, it challenged my perceptions and made me reflect deeply on life and the choices I make. The characters are richly developed, their growth feeling authentic and immersive. Every twist keeps you engaged, making it nearly impossible to put down, cant wait to start the next book!

Lots of fun to read.

This book about post - apocalyptic behavior of people. It was an interesting read but became a bit repetitive.
