Didn't expect it to be interesting but that was the most boring thing I've ever read.

A quick, perfect reference encyclopedia of magical uses for herbs.  The reference and index section of this book is perfect, and finding the listing for the plant or herb you're seeking is very easy.  Information is listed in a way that makes it quick to access and use, without reading large blocks of text to sift for what you need.

Will definitely be keeping this in my collection for years on end!  :)

I loved this book so much but apparently Cunningham steals from closed practices and acts as if they’re his own, so no rating.

This isn’t really a book to review. I read through his preface and through Part 1. The rest is reference material.

A very good basic introduction. Though, its dated terminology about the "opposite sex" and "if a WOMAN seeks a MAN" and vis versa is extremely annoying. It only focuses on maybe 5 or 6 magical intentions, mostly love, fertility, protection, healing, money, and psychic powers which was disappointing and very narrow. If this book was printed in color, it would greatly benefit the reader or macigal practioner as many of the botanical renderings are gritty and don't print well or make it difficult to tell the difference between potentially very dangerous plants and safe ones. Those grievances aside, I learned a lot about plants and their magical applications which is what I was looking for, I just need to keep looking.

This may very well be a book I buy. Not only is this a solid magical herbalism encyclopedia, but once again, Cunningham has written a guide that is at once inclusive and specific. His introduction is really spot-on and I love that he leaves in some of the less practical rituals to "spark the imagination." My only real issues with this volume are (a) his use of gender in dealing with the properties of the plants (of course, this could easily be ignored by a practitioner that doesn't cotton to such essentialism), and (b) the book's selection of plants is a little dated/Eurocentric for today's practitioner, as many Ayurvedic and TCM herbs are in wider circulation now. This book could use a little facelift, but it is still a practical guide for anyone interested in magical herbalism.
