3.7 AVERAGE

3.5?

This was awful. I HATED the premise and all of the characters. Stories that take place in such a short amount of time are so hit and miss with me. This was a HUGE miss. Unrealistic is an understatement.

This is a 3.5 that I'm rounding down to 3 stars. While this was really fun and I'm so so happy to see a cute fluffy LGBT book, I don't think this will stick with me for a few reasons:
-The main characters Katie and Mark become insta-friends. Like they just meet and then all of a sudden they are hanging out 24/7 and it came off as strange to me.
-The instalove with Katie and Violet was also really weird. Katie keeps running away because she's built up Violet to be this amazing person in her head (ok this resonated and I really liked this part) — but then Violet DOES turn out to be amazing and Katie postpones college for a year and says she wants to see where things go with Violet? Like no, you have barely even talked to this girl, what are you doing???
-So much cheesiness and angst and miscommunication and it was just frustrating!

9th December 2022 - I read this book a couple of years ago and though I enjoyed it while reading it, it wasn’t memorable and I probably won’t reread it again. There were some good quotes but I can’t even remember them

I love everything David Levithan touches, and this is no exception!

2.5 ⭐️ but rounded up to 3 on here

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review.

I’m late on this review, and so I’m writing it in the wake of the Orlando shooting. This book takes on a new layer because of that massacre. I hope many teens will read this book and understand that the LGBTQ+ community isn’t about highlighting differences, but also about finding commonalities with the world outside the nightclub.

For me, that’s what this book was: a classic romcom (or two, rolled into one!), but with LGBTQ+ characters. That’s it. Nothing earth-shattering.

Except:

It’s only now becoming normal to read queer narratives that are charming, simple, and funny. There are still some serious moments, sure, but moreover, this book shows teens that LGBTQ+ lives aren’t a struggle every day. And that sometimes, the struggle is simply being a teenager (and sometimes dumb) in the first place.

We need more LGBTQ+ fiction in order to show the wide range of queer experience.

Hah, read this years ago (2016?) before gifting to a friend, and never updated my goodreads XD

Don't remember much from the story but I didnt hate it!

More like 3.5, but erring towards 4. I love love love Nina LaCour, and this joint-authored novel with David Levithan (first I've read by him) was truly lovely and moving...but I didn't love it as much as EVERYTHING LEADS TO YOU or WE ARE OKAY. In terms of dual author/dual POV, though, it's a triumph. Those are hard to pull off (I would imagine).
