This book is a lot more intense than I remembered. Lots more death and heartbreak, and I think I underappreciated Cushman's skill in making Birdy both loveable and a brat.

One quibble I have is that not all girls were married off so young as we imagine in the middle ages, even noble girls. it does serve a purpose in this particular case though.

overall, an enjoyable reread.

Despite its age, it’s still a charming book for young readers, especially young girls.
