"Grief has slowly become integrated into my body and my art. Sometimes it still hurts enough that I gasp for air. Less often, grief curls me into a ball and renders me blind to anything outside of my shape. Other times, it moves into my chest as a wave, and with my hand to my heart and a deep breath, I sway until the intensity passes"

This book is a clear-eyed and unsentimental chronicle of loss after loss, presented with deep wisdom and perspective. It seems lurid to list off all the bad things that have happened to Christa Couture, so let me just say she's seen some shit. This book is about descending into some of the lowest lows that life can send you, and climbing up into the sunshine, not undamaged, but stronger.
It's also about friendship, art, performance (singing, my fave), courage and persistence.
Oh, and you have to wait until the very last two pages before you get to the "how to" part. It's worth the wait.

So much more than a memoir. This book made think of asking things like 'what if we took out and looked at all those things you want to bury, could we do that? Could we understand ourselves better?' There is so much love, beauty, and understanding hidden underneath the fear of losing. Lose the fear, and those pathways are open.
