This is one of the funniest books I've read in a while although it's also one of the saddest. It's a great balance between dark and light. I love the magical realism and Moon is such a great main character.
I read this on audiobook and just an FYI that this book has a couple pretty steamy sex scenes. I don't mind sex scenes in titles geared toward adults but sex scenes with teenagers always make me feel like an intruder in a space that isn't mine. Reading on audiobook really amplifies that feeling for me. (YMMV but don't be a creep).

Moon has a large heart and had to be so much for other people. Moon is trying to figure out herself and her place in the world. Then trying to undo all the negative things that has made her who she is. The family dynamics of it all and how important it is to unpack how someone’s actions impact us.
Moon and Santiago are so sweet. He’s grumpy but so caring of Moon. Liked how the book approaches sex-shaming others as well and accepting people and their sexuality.

If I could use one word to describe Moon it would be irreverent, which makes for some hilarious scenes since her twin sister, Star, is a hyper religious purity influencer on social media. I love Moon’s character because she is someone who you just really want to succeed throughout the book as she comes to realize that she has been emotionally and physically abused her entire life. Her view of herself and her body has been tainted by that abuse, and she transforms into a young woman her knows her beauty and worth. I also really enjoyed the romantic relationship between Moon and Santiago and the discussions about his disability as an amputee.

This book hit me in the heart 💜 Moon’s story is heartbreaking, and her struggles with abuse and grief moved me to tears. But her journey of self-discovery and self-love moved me even more. She is soft and powerful, angry and sweet, broken and healing and so many wonderful and complicated things. The relationship she develops with Santiago is so full of hope, and the relationship she discovers with her self worth is even more so. This book is beautiful.
Graphic: Physical abuse, Grief, Suicide, Fatphobia, Death of parent, Body shaming, Religious bigotry, and Emotional abuse
Moderate: Panic attacks/disorders, Ableism, Sexual content, and Sexual harassment
Really disturbing instances of parental abuse and neglect, body shaming and slut shaming, and religious bigotrylanternhillbooks's review
