once everyone famous was starting to write fanfiction i couldn't suspend my disbelief. i feel so bad saying this but it just felt kind of ridiculously unrealistic. everything else up to that point seemed more "unlikely but could definitely happen" and it just changed the tone to me. shame too, the disability and fat rep were out of this world!

Spicy This Was!

Hot dog, I did not expect how hot this books would get. The cover gives off a different tone but it was a nice surprise. A little ridiculous at times (and I found myself skipping some of the script and fanfic parts, just because I wanted to know what would happen next with April and Marcus. Really cute. Very spicy

Fanfiction can be a way individuals express themselves without being judged. Live another life or be someone they can dream of being. You have mail meets Fan Fiction with a spicy addition of romance. April Whittier does just that in her fanfic stories but she's tired of hiding and wants to bee fully seen. Be careful what you wish.... Dade explores what beauty means and the standards women are held to. I am so happy to see a protagonist that is not size 2 and also being fierce and successful! Through April, Dade portrays how standards can break friendships and family ties. April is a complex and intellectual woman who is making a path for herself. Readers will relate to the body shaming and body dysmorphia that April goes through. Dade pairs April well with Marcus who superficially is a typical romance lead. He has his own struggles such as dyslexia and hiding his true nature. The excerpts of chats, Marcus' past roles and fanfiction gives the plot and characters depth. Spoiler Alert is a fast paced, witty romantic comedy that will have readers laughing and thinking about their own image.

So [b:Spoiler Alert|50496918|Spoiler Alert (Spoiler Alert, #1)|Olivia Dade|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1584239588l/50496918._SY75_.jpg|75471187] was mostly fine, and even really great in some places. I love the message that of course fat people deserve love and can be desired as they are. I think all the fanfic trope were funny to see in a traditionally published book, it makes for some interesting meta. For the most part I think the miscommunication makes more sense in this book than in so many other romance books I've read (though it was still frustratingly ridiculous in some places).
I only have two "problems" with the book:

- This is so, so straight (my primary experience of fandom and fanfic has been steeped in lgbtqa+, so it feels very foreign to not have that)
- In parts this book felt so extremely long.

So while the premise and themes are interesting I'm not sure that I'd want to read more of this series.

This was so freaking adorable. What is it weird that a cartoon cover romance is now inspired me to watch GOT? I’ll take no further questions.
