Depressing, scary, and vital - this book is packed with information. Over consumption and our inability (at this point) to have zero waste is the cause and one of the scary end results. Some of this book is depressing but the author does list a bunch of apps/URL's for those interested in policy change. She also offers some solutions and definitely gets the reader to question "how many people died for the diamond in your ring?". The author's blog and website are fantastic.

Subtitled The Impact of Overconsumption on the Planet, Our Communities, and Our Health-And How We Can Make It Better, this is an expansion on the 20 minute Internet movie of the same name. The book digs into the five facets of the linear economic system in use in North America. It’s amazing, it’s controversial and it’s has been haunting me all summer.

Review:

Some parts were interesting. Other parts really weren't.

Review previously placed on my blog:

I'm currently reading The story of stuff by Annie Leonard. I'm listening to the audiobook. I'm reading this for my Reading more nonfiction challenge. I'm also reading it for the Backlist readathon with the prompt: favorite colour on the cover.

I'm really enjoying this so far. It's very interesting and well written. Audiobook is also great, narrated by the author herself. Excited to continue.

I ended up not super liking this. The first part was very technical and pretty boring to be honest. After that it became more interesting, but I wasn't too excited about it. Still would recommend, but will keep a look out for other books on this topic as well.

I feel very conflicted about rating this book. I didn't like it at all. It was very scientific and boring and took me weeks to read, and all the information is horrifically depressing, especially since it was written in 2010 so all the info is out of date and likely the stats are even worse now. However, it was incredibly galvanizing and made me feel even more dedicated to my climate activism. So boring, depressing, and affective?
