This small Newbery Honor book packs a punch. Great characters, tangible setting, and deep topics that are not glossed over. This is a fun and worthy read. I have enjoyed each of Jennifer Holm's children and YA books and will definitely be checking out more!

I thought this was a great book. It is based on actual events and people in the history of Key West. Having been to Key West recently this was an interesting comparison. I really enjoyed reading this book.

I really enjoyed this book and learning about life and culture in the Florida Keys in the 1930s. I just wish the ending hadn't felt so rushed. I'd say this is a 3.5 for me. I loved the author's notes at the end and definitely would share those with children!

A nice, nostalgic clean read with plenty of lively dialogue and colorful characters.

One of my favorite childhood books. I have read this like five times and I have never gotten tired of it. Absolutely heartwarming. It also has a great vibe.

I like scrappy Turtle and the Diaper Gang, and interesting historical fiction that's not about war is always a good find. Set in Key West in the 1930s. Cover felt misleading - looks like a chick-lit beach read instead of Depression-era story about a girl with moxie.

The author’s notes at the end about the history and eccentricities of Key West saved this book for me. Without that context, the story would have been a bit more meh. A cute and interesting story.

I was doing a pre-read to see if this would be appropriate for Mallory yet. Reading level and content seems fine (2.7, ages 8-12), but it is a longer chapter book than she currently reads, without any illustrations.
