decently written but the racist, sexist, and classist comments were a bit too much for me to stomach. i get the idea of creating an unlikeable narrator, but i feel like the title suggests that this is someone we’re supposed to be more empathetic with? insinuating that the protagonist actually loved his ex just seems like a steaming pile of bullshit to me

So, this was a story in the short story collection, This Is How You Lose Her. I read it a year ago. Maybe more. It was a good little exploration of men's reactions to relationships. How men are emotionally incapable of expressing themselves and it becomes painfully/violently exercised. If you want a better short story collection that deals with similar ideas... Read: Men Without Women by Haruki Murakami

I'll rate this one the same as the major collection. It was good, but not groundbreaking.

You won't like this if you can't stand complex men. If you read this, or the collection, and think the author is sexist and a pig. Read an interview with him and you'll see he's absolutely not. He's a survivor.
