so much detail and so much more in the maps and glossary. this book will be reread many times. it is a very complete world that i enjoyed visiting very much. The characters are interesting and well developed.
Rating: 3.75
The work put into the world of this book is really amazing, but the plot is just so-so. I'll read the rest of the series though, but I felt like nothing much happened in this one.

Monster Blood Tattoo was a great story of adventure. The author introduces the reader to a land of magic, monsters and danger. The writing isn't the most engaging but the plot is interesting enough to keep the reader flipping those pages.
much more to come. But this was a delightful little journey with a boy named Rosamund.
Let's all request being able to do halfsies so I can give this book a 3.5! Super fun and clever read. I'm so impressed by a writer's ability to create a whole new world with its own society and rules and whatnot.
Despite the name, a beautifully imagined world full of fine detail and a compelling story of the struggle between monsters and humans. Love it!

Plot or Character Driven:
Character
Just rediscovered this book after YEARS of looking for a main character 'rassmussin' and remembering some orphan kid picked up by an upstanding lady and something to do with lampposts! What a glorious day to have refound a book youd thought youd lost! Just as creative worldbuilding and illustrations as i remember!

Pretty much, not sure why I gave this book 2 whole stars. It's a gigantic info dump, a character that acts and is treated like a child much younger than I think he was actually supposed to be. It's message is as subtle as a billy club to the face. The concept was the only thing about this book that worked for me.

Some elements were expected: This story begins the way several fantasy, and in fact, fiction books in general, begin. The main character is a boy in an orphanage who gets chosen, at last, for a career. He then sets off and has adventures on his way to the chosen destination. At first, I was mildly disappointed because it felt like the author was merely checking fantasy boxes. Orphaned boy? Check. Monsters? Check. Mysterious fate that grownups whisper about in corners? Check. Being waylaid on the way to a chosen destination to have adventures along the road? Check.
It also had the unfortunate issue of the main character being dreadfully naive, which can be annoying to read. I was going, “COME ON! DO YOU NOT SEE THEY ARE TRICKING YOU?” several times throughout the book.
Yet, for all that, I enjoyed it, and I think this will lead somewhere interesting. The author put quite a bit of time, both through illustrations and vocabulary, in inventing this world. I have a feeling that it will take me somewhere interesting, so I will continue to read this series to see. After all, sometimes checking the fantasy boxes is necessary to get you to where you need to go I suppose. Although it might not be innovative, I was intrigued, and there were enough interesting elements to keep that interest piqued.
Recommend: I shall hold off recommending this book for now, because I would like to see how the trilogy finishes, but if you like fantasy in general, you might like this book. I especially think if you are a fan of high fantasy, you would enjoy this work with all the terminology and detailed appendixes.
