Though I've come to enjoy this series more over time, I at first struggled to understand why I didn't enjoy it as much as the first one. Then I listened to a video from an author on YouTube where they discussed how a sequel can take away from the ending to the previous story if it undoes something that was satisfying about the previous installment, and I realized that was where my feelings toward this series came from.

The thing is that this series is good and well written, but because of the way it made the ending to the previous series less satisfying, I found myself unable to enjoy it as much as I might want to.

For that reason, I suggest that if you do read this spin-off series after having read the first one you do so after having taken some time away from it. I personally enjoyed the original series more, but it's hard for me to tell whether that would still be the case had I not read the original books. That said, this series should also be understandable for those who have not read the original series, though it does spoil the plot of the previous books.

That said, this was still an enjoyable read. Cinda Williams Chima is clearly a skilled author, and I look forward to her future work. These feelings are also lessened over time by a choice the author makes as the story goes on. *spoiler*
Spoiler When we get to meet the character who was killed off in the dream world, and it was made clear that the 25 years in between the series were happy ones.

Cinda Williams Chima knows how to end a series. So often I am left dissapointed with series finales. This one was fantastic. The world building and chracters have been amazing this whole series. Chima is one seriously underrated author and deserves more credit. I can now confidently say after reading two series that she is one of my favourite YA fantasy authors.
Extra bonus points for writing female characters that don't make me want to bang my head against the wall!

Cinda Williams Chima knocks it out of the park again!! What an amazing conclusion to an incredible series. I can't get over her impeccable writing style as well as the way she creates a world. Her characters are easy to love and I am very attached to most of them. The magic is always cool and I loved how it was incorporated here in both the healers and the mages. I live for second-generation stories and this series did it so well.  I enjoyed how this ended even though I didn't want the book to be over. I'd be remiss if I didn't bring up the characters again. I love the alternating POV's and how far everyone has come since book one. The reunions I was looking for were so worth it and I really liked the implication of where everyone ended up. For a 600+ page book, I thought this was so fast-paced and full of action. I absolutely loved it and can't wait to continue being blown away by Cinda!!

I'm sad this series is over because I'm going to miss these characters so much! This was a near perfect ending and I feel very satisfied. I was very happy to see how certain story arcs ended and what fate these characters ended.

I love all of them, but I was most happy to see more of Destin and Evan, my favourites, and Jenna with her intensity and incredible magic. I was shocked at some of the turns certain characters took and how their actions propelled the story in ways I didn't expect it to go. There were a lot of betrayals and twists immersed in the action filled plot. Characters were running all over the map trying to find each other and getting in trouble instead.

As much as I adored this finale and for as many times as I was biting my nails, I did think the ending came about a little too quickly and I have a lot of questions that weren't really addressed or answered. I love this series enough to let my imagination fill in the blanks, but given how the first book began and the events progressed, I would have liked to have seen all the plot holes wrapped up.

That said, I still had a great time reading this book and am truly going to miss this cast. I'm particularly going to miss Destin and Evan. Seriously, I cannot get enough of those two. A great read for anyone who loves fantasies with epic adventure, twists, romance, and awesome magic!
