I do really like the majority of this book. Destin Karn’s schemes in the Fellsian court, Lyss coming into being the queen that the Fells needs, and Hal Matelon’s reluctant leadership are all highlights to me. The majority of this book is enjoyable and fun, filled with fantasy politics and dragons and magical heritages.
However, there are a few story beats that felt incomplete. Primarily, Lila Byrne’s arc. I felt like she was sidelined towards the end of this book, her capabilities never fully explored. I wish we could’ve gotten more from her.
I go back and forth on how I feel about the final battle. My main problem with it is the lack of Destin’s involvement, even though it was his mission in the first place. He shows up after the battle is won to reunite with Evan, which is very sweet and I do love that scene, but he is noticeably absent for the actual defeat of Celestine. For such a built up villain, her defeat felt too easy. I much more enjoyed the earlier victory against King Jarat, it felt much more satisfying and that scene was exciting to read.
Despite some flaws and inconsistencies, I still loved this book and I love this series. Deathcaster gives fitting ends to most of its characters, and goes through a lot of royal court intrigue as well as answering questions about certain characters. I might be biased since my favorite characters got a lot of spotlight (Destin Karn and Alyssa ana’Raisa), but I think Deathcaster is an enjoyable if not perfect finale.
