This book was A LOT to process. Hearing everything this woman went through from her kidnapping to her 18 years of captivity/sexual enslavement/abuse was absolutely heartbreaking. Jaycee Dugard covers everything she did to survive and endure the absolute hell her captors, Phillip and Nancy Garrido, put her through. She was captured before I was even born and wasn't found until after I was in middle school. That is WILD! The justice system and figures who were put in place to keep the offenders from committing the same crime failed horribly, and this case is just one clear example of how current systems are failing and potentially missing crucial, life-threatening things. For this, I commend her greatly for getting her story out there and for her work moving forward with her foundation.

While I do admire the work Jaycee did to process what she went through and provide insight into what people in her shoes have endured, the simplistic prose of the book and some organization with timelines and processing things that went on could have been cleaned up a bit to erase some of the repetitive sections. There were times where I thought I had doubled back and accidentally re-listened to a section. I am, however, conflicted with me saying this because there is a certain rawness that exists with the prose being solely in her voice with minimal to no edits or additional commentary from outside professionals. Some of this could also result from the book being published so soon after she was rescued combined with the therapy session nature of processing 18 years of intense trauma. While not a perfect book, there is a lot of value and information to be gained from such a unique testimony.

(Note: I've been trying to "get better" at audiobook reading, and it seems that I can more easily focus on the material when it's nonfiction rather than fiction. This isn't as pertinent for the review as it is for me noting the influx of audiobook options compared to my comfort zone of physical books.)

this book is absolutely heartbreaking. hearing everything she went through for EIGHTEEN YEARS is insane. it’s so beyond messed up. what a beautiful story though in the end of unlearning and healing.

This was an emotional read. I can’t imagine being strong enough to endure what Jaycee went through. (I always give autobiographies 5 stars because who am I to judge their life story? However the writing is a little juvenile-but take into consideration this girl was kidnapped at 11 years old and did not receive further education at the point this book was published. The writing style did not bother me.)
