The Book Swap

Anyone else get so frustrated when a book has amazing unrealized potential?!

No? Ok, then how about when you buy a bag of chips and open it only to discover that it’s more than half full of air? Right?

OK. That’s what I’m feeling right now. THAT disappointment.

The protagonist opens up book mail to discover she’s been gifted a psychological thriller by someone in her book club. When she gets into the book, she discovers a little note tucked inside that reads “Help me!”

Sounds great right?

Well, I read and read and then I came to the epilogue.

My heart rate didn’t increase. I didn’t resort to biting my fingernails. I wasn’t frantically trying to guess who wrote the note. There was NO sense of urgency. No fear.

It was like I was on an easy rider bike, my hair flowing behind me, an open road….and nobody to race me.

I hate this word, but it sums it up….”MEH”......

It was a quick read. So, there's that.

I was gifted this advance copy by BooksGoSocial through NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.

If you are looking for a short, fast read with an implausible yet thoroughly entertaining plot, The Book Swap by JE Rowney is the book for you. It's about Laura, a 30ish English woman who has fled home after her marriage broke up. All she does all day is read, watch TV, drink endless cups of tea and spend hours on Facebook in book groups. She belongs to a book swap group and gets a thriller in the mail. Inside is a note that says "Help me."
If she can't help herself, how will she help someone else??

This was a quick fun read. It would have been a 4* book if not for the writing style. It was odd. As if two very different people with very different writing styles wrote it together.

Thank you, NetGalley, for the chance to read and review this book. All opinions expressed are mine and freely given.

When I first began the book, I was afraid it would be boring because it seemed to be going at a slow pace- thankfully, that ended up not being the case. I was able to relate to both the Laura character and the Catherine character right away because I have had experiences in common with each of them (not to mention the fact that they're both reading addicts and so am I, haha). As I made my way through the story, it became more intriguing and compelling, and I found myself unable to put it down. I didn't see the twists coming as I have done with many other thriller-type books, and I'm happy with the way the ending turned out- as a matter of fact, it was the perfect ending. Great book!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This one had me hooked. I needed to know who wrote the note! I read this in on sitting.  Loved it! I will say toward the end why wouldn't the main character go to the police, in that sense it was a lil ridiculous but I gave it 5 stars because I had fun reading this one.
