I too would buy a Russian fox for $18,000 if it wasn’t horrifically inhumane

This was the first book I read by Annie Hartnett. It's super quirky, and I love her writing style. It immediately made me want to read something else by her. Rabbit Cake did not disappoint.

This book was a fast read and very good. Despite it having strong themes of death and the opioid epidemic, it really was humorous and lighthearted. The characters were lovable and dynamic. I was worried I’d be a mess with having lost my dad at the same age as Emma, but I found it instead uplifting and a great, refreshing view of death. I also think the author was tasteful in their depiction of the opioid crisis. It really was a hopeful and uplifting story.

Annie Hartnett writes about death with levity and a sense of humor. This book made me think about death and afterlife in a new way, and gave me a greater appreciation for the flaws that make humans human. Also, lots of animal/pet content in this book! Dogs, foxes, bears, boars, birds, etc

Never has a book made me cry in one paragraph and laugh in the next. Wish there was more payoff and explanation for why
E.H.B. was able to/decided to haunt Cliff Starling in particular.

I loved the narrators - omniscient ghost chorus, what a unique and lovely perspective to write from! The story did get slightly unbelievable by the end, but with the elements of magical realism one just has to suspend some disbelief.

Ok I flew through this book and thoroughly enjoyed it, BUT it was not 100% to my tastes so it doesn’t get the full 5. It was a bit silly goofy for me and attempted to tackle drug addiction from a light hearted perspective which I just didn’t vibe with. Everything else I loved. Made me cry and laugh. Would recommend because I’m curious what others think.
