Such a charming little story with a cool narrative style. I loved the perspective through which this story was told. It also had just the right amount of triumphs and struggles throughout, for pretty much all of the main characters. I definitely recommend this book if you like stories that tug at the heartstrings (but not too intensely) and like good character development!

this kept me turning pages quickly from the very start, although i don't think the plot twist fully paid off- the ending was tied in too tight of a bow to be believable, but bonus points for the surprise narration

This book was delightful!!! It was described as a tragiccomedy on the inside cover and that’s just perfect- the content is dark but the tone is light and filled with love and redemption.

“Who was she bargaining with? She had always said she was an atheist, or at least an agnostic, whenever the topic came up, but secretly she thought it would be nice to believe in God sometimes, really go whole hog on the Jesus thing. It would be so great if you really felt like there was someone out there who listened to your bargains, your pleas, your promises to yourself. Like someone somewhere was keeping a lookout. We’re here, we told her, as we often did.

I have never read a book where the narrator is the collective (and individual) omniscient souls in the Maple Street Cemetery and it may be by new favorite POV. It did remind me a bit of “How to Leave the House” which I also loved and was very much ABOUT the town.

“Anticipatory grief, it’s called, when you’re sad about something that hasn’t happened yet. Oh man, we thought at Maple Street, how we missed the excruciating pain of being alive.”

This book REALLY makes me want to write books!!!

Given that it’s January 4th, this might be a bold claim to make, but I don’t know if I will read a better book this year. Unlikely Animals is meaningful, funny, and relatable, all in perfect proportions. I can’t wait to recommend this to everyone I know and de-friend them if they don’t like it.

Don’t know how this gem got on my radar but I loved it. Quirky, funny, sad. Great characters
