I thought this was fun, imaginative and while it had a lot of aspects and storylines they weren't too varied or strange to feel like it all connected.
I didn't know it was possible for a story about a dying father and a missing drug addict to be a delight, but that's the word I keep going back to for Unlikely Animals. This is one of the quirkiest books I've read, but I knew before I even reached the halfway point that I wanted a hard copy for my permanent shelf so I can read it again some day. That said, I do highly recommend the audio, as the narrator was fantastic.
The story here was innovative and interesting, but I thought the execution was the real star of this novel. Annie Hartnett writes about sad and difficult topics (drug addiction, mental health, death) with a levity that somehow supplies both entertainment and respect for her subjects. Her dry humor had me chuckling through sadness, which I think is a hard feat to accomplish.
I can't recommend this book enough—it probably isn't for everyone, since it's got several elements that are a bit out there (it's narrated by the collective group of dead people at the local cemetery), but you should definitely give it a try when you need to read something different.

This warm, poignant, engrossing novel set in NH tackles serious issues of addiction and death but is also hilariously funny. An absolute delight to read! #Booktopia My full review & an audio sample: https://bookbybook.blogspot.com/2023/05/fiction-review-unlikely-animals.html
