Earnest and whimsical, but rooted in reality. One of the most heartwarming stories I've read all year.

The first 40%, I thought this book was so odd and the characters were odd, etc. But after I passed that point, somehow I LOVED everything. The author makes a complex story centered around a dying man with dimentia and his chaotic family- with so many side stories- a missing person mystery, a little love story, some broken friendships, a sons struggle to heal from heroin addiction, and a wild hunting wilderness for millionaires. Somehow it flowed really well, and I truly enjoyed it. Imagine my shock to find out at the end it is historical fiction and somehow most of it is true.
4.5 but I don't mind rounding up. This was just a heartening, silly book with imperfect characters finding their way. The POV was unexpected and genius.
LOVED THIS ONE! LOVED LOVED LOVED IT!
Reminded me of Sarah Winman's Still Life, but it's set in New Hampshire in the 20teens because, as Hartnett herself says, she likes to write characters who "use the internet and talk about farts." It's very funny, quite insightful, and excellent on teaching. Yes! Highly recommended. And I did read it in about two days. Some COVID recovery time in there, but also the first sunny, breezy day in a long time so good outdoor reading weather.
