i started reading this book at the right time. Like one of the characters, I had a father who died of a neurodegenerative disease and it brought me some comfort/reflection to witness that in a book. Then, unfortunately like many characters, someone I've known since childhood died of an overdose. I appreciate the way this book weaves whimsical historic fact with very real health challenges. it's nice to have a happy ending sometimes

This was such a ridiculous book, but not necessarily in a bad way.
The author seemingly crammed in as many different ideas/subplots as she could, resulting in a quite absurd plot that's almost overwhelming at times. For the most part I liked how “out there” it was, although I think some readers will find the juxtaposition between the heavy themes (terminal illness, dementia, opioid epidemic, etc) and quirkiness uncomfortable or perhaps even disrespectful.
That being said, if you like whimsical and chaotic storylines, then this might be a winner for you. Some parts drag a bit (mainly the articles/history bits, imo) but it’s still lots of fun and you never really know what’s coming next.
