I liked this a lot. I liked that the Graces weren't straightforward or unchanging, people were still learning about them the way they learn about themselves as they grow. I liked seeing Katsa's emotional development as she experienced support and intimacy,
and her romance with Po was really, very sweet.

Oh wow I inhaled this book. It’s so great to find characters I love and a world I can lose myself in.

*reread from adolescence*

Definitely holds up as a fun story, although in retrospect much hornier than I remember (neutral)

Rough around the edges with a climatic confrontation that's over in a flash, but I admire what Cashore was doing here with the theme of escaping abuse and finding yourself / beginning to flourish afterwards. I also appreciate Cashore's inclusion of a nontraditional relationship with Katsa's insistence on never getting married or having children. I remember that made quite an impact on me back when I first read this book as a teenager.
