It's one of my go-tos when I want to re-read something that feels confortable. I love the characters and the feelings the book evokes. It's really refreshing reading something medieval-like with healthy relationships and without rampant misogyny: there are a coulpe of sexist coments from secondary characters, but they are not really relevant to the book, and are quickly dissmissed by the main characters.
The plot has some dark points (see the content warnings), but the darker stuff is often insinuated or briefly mentioned.
I've read it in Spanish, so I can't really rate the style.

This is probably the first time I've re-read this book since reading it when it first came out and it still stands up! I love Katas and Po and the way they change throughout the book. I don't know why this isn't on my re-read list more often! This is such a great world to jump into, and I'm glad I'm re-reading it before reading Winterkeep. I needed to be re-acquainted with these characters before jumping into a new novel for sure.

This review ended up being a bit of a word vomit so you have been warned.

This series is the surprise delight of the year so far. The characters and world are interesting and complex. The magic (Graced) are a really unique idea. I particularly enjoy that people may be graced in something that is singularly un-useful. In most fantasy novels (with magic) if you win the genetic lottery and end up magical, it's like a quick path to power, success and prestige. In this book magic users are treated differently that I had seen in any other fictional world. They aren't gods and they aren't reviled. They simply exist and if they can use their Grace for something useful that's great. But since not all Graces are useful (imagine, for example, being really really good at climbing trees or blowing bubblegum and that's your whole schtick), people are sometimes not terribly interested in the Graced. I can't rave enough about this series. All three are very unique but quite excellent. Highly recommend.

Generally this is how I rate books:

5 Stars - I never wanted to put the book down
4 Stars - I was usually interested in continuing most of the time
3 Stars - I often got bored but was able to finish
2 Stars - I got bored enough to put the book down - I couldn't finish (or would have if not for some reason)
1 Star - I was deeply offended by something in this book.
