What to say about this amazing series other than it's amazing ? So unreal, and maybe that's why it's popular world-wide and is being made into a movie. You really won't be able to put it down. This book started me reading, started it all. If Twilight was never written, I would not be reading booka at all. HIGHLY RECOMENDED !

The main character is portrayed as a helpless, weak teenage girl, who is in love with a manipulative, dangerous, older man disguised as a seventeen year old vampire. So many sexist stereotypes in this book that continuously ruined the romance for me.

A solid 4 stars. While this may not be considered peak literature, I had a lot of fun with it and the over-the-top drama and angst of it all. I think that Bella has a unique perspective. She's headstrong almost to a fault, and she falls hard for someone who maybe didn't deserve it. It's refreshing that the POV of a seventeen year old girl felt like it was actually that of a seventeen year old girl. I enjoyed the first love trope, and I felt it was nice to know, going into the book, that I could let loose and be transported back in time to that frame of mind. Bella is a fun protagonist, seeing as she really has no sense of self-preservation, and the world she is thrust into is whimsically dramatic. All this being said, I did read this as a tandem read with Midnight Sun, and I unironically felt that the writing in the original flowed much more naturally and offered less divisive narratives and motivations. I think that these books together, while long-winded and definitely slow burn, should you read them in tandem, create a really good foundation for understanding the world of the story and the motivations of each character. I think that I preferred Bella's perspective more than Edward's, so I would rate this book slightly higher than Midnight Sun, specifically because it makes sense why a seventeen year old would fall in love easily, but I still never got over feeling weird regarding the fact that Edward is almost a century older. It also did take me a bit to get into either book, but around the halfway point, I started to really enjoy myself and felt excited to read what was coming, as someone who has never interacted with the books, let alone the movies. I don't think this book is trying to be anything but what you assume of it, and that really makes for an interesting read. I will also note that I think the best part of the book, are the side characters, and when they all had their moment to shine in the action. The book certainly has its flaws, but I still found so much good entertainment from it. I'm excited to read what comes next!

Um. In short, not enough realistic character development for me. (And I LOVE vampire novels.)

Top three reasons I didn't like this book:
1. Bella spends far too much time talking about how entrancingly wonderful Edward's breath is. Yes, his breath. He drinks animal blood for sustenance, but his breath is magically delicious.

2. Why would a 90+ year old vampire want to pretend to be a high school student? He (and his sibs) should be bored spitless, hanging around teenagers all day.

3. The whole 90 yo Edward and 17 yo Bella had a feel of unclean love about it. He's old and experienced, she's young and clueless...why, exactly, does he find that appealing? Is it love or a power issue?
