I didn’t enjoy this book as much as I enjoyed the first one. It ended up feeling like a slog to get through. It had an interesting idea, but the execution just wasn’t that great.

This might be unpopular but i actually liked these book a bit better than the first. It answered a lot of questions that I had from the first book like - Would she be a better queen since she didn’t actually know about her inheritance and seemed like a character that had an ambitious dream/life plan? Also whether she would do anything for the people/How she would rule? etc. She is still a character that has a lot pf flaws and I was intrigued with the similarities she had with that lady she killed from the first book (i forgot her name)

I really wasn't sure that I wanted to finish this series but I'm glad that I did. It took me a minute to get back into the story who some of the minor characters were. Once I remembered all of the details the story really took off for me. It really wasn't expecting that ending that was Pleasants they surprised and pleased that I ended up finishing this duology.

So, I read Amber and Dusk last summer. It was a book I loved dearly but that had many major flaws that made the rating not so great. You can reference my review. This book did a far better job. I feel that the author thought a lot on the things that she missed the mark on in the first book. That being said there are of course issues with the sequel. What I can say is that this remains a great duology in my mind.

Things I really enjoyed: The mythology being integrated more into the world building/ having relevance to the story. Oleander, everything about her. Mirage being sort of tolerable for parts of the book, she grew on me more. The story having action/adventure in it with politics. The first book was very social heavy in comparison. More backstory on Oleander and Sunder.

Things I didn't like as much: Less Sunder, I really liked him in the first book. A tad bit of cheesy in some major spots. Some of the dialogue or situations created a cringe moment for me.

Bonus- Lullaby might be aromantic/asexual for all we know! In the first book it was hinted she was in love with a girl who disappeared. But in this book she says she can't love anyone nor want to kiss, when Mirage offers to kiss her. Even if the author didn't intend it, in that moment Lullaby became my person.

Good read! If you liked the first one, this one won't disappoint.

"You need to go home and remember how to love yourselves. And each other. And I-I need to learn how to love myself before I can ask anyone to else to."

This book was just a nice YA book to read. It had a few ideas that I've seen in the past, but I just loved the pacing, the romance, the ending, all the things you'd expect in a young adult book was executed really well in my eyes.
There isn't a lot to say other than I'm glad I picked this up. I wouldn't have if it weren't for Owlcrate giving me the first in this duology, and I hope Lyra Selene does more writing in the future because my GOODNESS she knows how to write some good lines (she just needs to keep going and she'll become amazing).

Even better than the first one, but the first one is necessity to understand the complexities of this one.
