This was a really strange and beautiful book. I didn’t love it, but I can appreciate it for what it was.

This is a hard book to review because I'm not sure I really got it. I want to read more of the author's poetry - the book feels like a prose poem, so much so that it's often hard to keep track of who's speaking at any given moment.

I personally had a hard time getting past some of the grosser body stuff in the book, but ymmv. There are parts where I was like "oh my God I love this" and then we'd get to another bit of body horror or shit, and I'd have to disengage again.

felt like every line was breathed out of me, but in such a way that i was gasping for air. depicted inter- generational trauma in such a telling, informative way

Beautiful, visceral, poetic, intimate, mythical.

[b:Bestiary|43297216|Bestiary|K-Ming Chang|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1583336476l/43297216._SY75_.jpg|67187043] is unlike any book I have ever read before, and I struggle with defining its shape and story in a clear, digestible sentence. This was a book that made me think. Made me pause. Made me re-read lines in a whisper just to taste the rhythm of words in my mouth. This is a story about stories, a story about mothers and daughters, a story about growing up, a story of cultural diaspora, a story about love.

This book is only around 250 pages, but it feels much longer because every word that K-Ming Chang writes is purposeful and carefully chosen. Take your time with this one. Do not feel frustrated if you can only take small bites at a time. Enjoy the taste of it. Let it linger on your tongue.
