A perfect mixture of adventure and romance. When Violet Redmond uses her powers of deduction, there is only one thing apparent: that her brother is the sought-after pirate Le Chat, and that she must do whatever it takes to bring him home and escape the noose. Thus, she wheedles her way onto the ship of the earl tasked by the king to capture Le Chat, and embarks on an adventure. This story really did have it all in terms of pirates, life upon a ship, and action. I am always in search of historical romances that do more than linger around a house party or a ballroom, and this one delivered.

The romance between Violet and Captain Flint was also good. Both engaged in a sensual game of chess with the other, pulling the tension to delicious heights. All in all, this was a good story about the lengths a person will travel for the love of another, and the ability of that love to bring out the hidden qualities within.

I just adored this book! JAL always enchants, and this book was not an exception. I loved Violet as heroine, and enjoyed watching her journey and growth through this book. As a side note, Asher gave me such Jason Mamoa vibes. Asher was excellent MMC. I was deeply invested in their love story, and story arch. My favorite of the series so far!

Update I 100% agree!!!

the whole “savage” thing was super racist and bothered me every time lol but this was a decent foray into a slightly more action filled HR even if the editing left much to be desired

Reread 2023

This still holds up as one of my favorite in the series.
The reluctance with which these two realise they are made for each other is perfection.

Although Julie Anne Long's Pennyroyal Green series is more miss than hit for me, this particular book is one of the better installments.

Violet is somewhat spoiled and childish but is quite likable despite her faults. Her love interest, the hunky Captain Flint, has the patience of a saint putting up with her shenanigans and TSTL moments. Their chemistry is off the charts and goes a long way toward compensating for the shortcomings of the writing and lack of historical accuracy.

All in all, not too bad and I will read the next one as I already have it for Kindle.

Violet Redmond is my hero.

The girl threw all her life up in the air at the most remote chance she might find her brother and make sure he was safe.

She found a way to smuggle herself on a ship full of strange men going to who knows where for who knows how long.

She managed to convince the most stubborn, hard-headed man in the history of the world that not only her suspicions made sense (and let's be honest here, everything was circumstantial at best) but that he actually needed her to capture who he was after.

Then, she fell in love with the man, made him fall in love with her, slept with him, killed a man to protect him, and STILL managed to trick him and stay a step ahead of him at all times to save her brother from him.

She also decoded a bunch of clues to figure out a whole slavery trade the Crown had no clue about, whilst being honest to herself and with Asher the whole time.

She also slept on a lumpy mattress and ate lumpy food when all her life she lived in luxury. She spent most of her time working in the kitchen when she'd never lifted a finger to do anything harder than embroider a napkin. All that with minimal complaint and never losing composure.

Seriously, my fucking hero.

And Asher was her perfect match. His whole "I don't know how to love" thing got annoying by the end, but thankfully he got his head out of his ass in time to salvage his relationship with Violet.

Oh, and the sex scenes? Hot. Hot hot hot hot hot. Hot.

I've had a hard time connecting with this author's work but this is one of the few that I have truly enjoyed. That said, there is WAY too much on-page time for the previous MC's and residents of The Rougue's Palace. They are very likeable but it got tedious after a while and eventually I just started skimming those sections. Overall though, a fun, lighthearted read; I wouldn't recommend if looking for angst.
