This story must have been such a banger back then. I always thought of it as a children's book, but that's not essentially true. It contains a lot of satire that is quite entertaining. I mean, who wouldn't like to discuss taxes and economic affairs with giants?

My goal with this norton critical edition was to read the preface and the contexts. I thought that the contexts would include examples of the literature Gulliver's Travels satirizes, giving me context before I read the actual book from a different edition. It may do that, but the vast majority is stuff that's better read after the book. Which makes sense given that the edition does in fact place it afterwards, but that's not what I wanted. Additionally, that stuff was really boring, so by the time I got to the part that may or may not have been what I was looking for, I was out of stamina to read more difficult text that might not actually be what I'm looking for. The titles and footnotes in this section don't do a particularly good job for every section explaining why it was included and thus why you may want to read it. All in all, I am quite disappointed with the contexts section of this edition of Gulliver's Travels, though I must admit that I am not the target audience for it.

I almost gave this book an extra star because I was so relieved to finish it. In all honesty, I am glad I read it and appreciate the ahead-of-its-time-ness but the satire was just too much for me and the writing is extremely difficult to get through. Nonetheless, if you haven't read it, it might be worth the effort.

Although well written and incredibly imaginative, I cannot help but be offended by Swift’s misogyny in the portrayal of women as the form of grotesque. A challenge to read, and a relief when it was finished!
