Pretty good quick read. Inking and color design are on point for the newest films, but the stories are less than peak imagination. Disappointed by the lack of female names in the creative team.

I LOVED the Star Trek (2009) movie. It actually cannot be understated how much I loved it.

So when I saw this graphic novel, a series bridging that movie and the (much too long-awaited) sequel, I knew I had to read it. Even better, the artists did a pretty spectacular job capturing the actors' likenesses.

The two stories in this are apparently re-hashing old Star Trek episodes, "Where No Man Has Gone Before" and "The Galileo Seven." I never consistently watched any of the TV series, so they're both new to me.

As a graphic novel, this isn't the best. Great graphic novels really invest me in the stories and characters. This had goodwill built into it from the movie, but without that these were two decent but not extraordinary moving stories.

However, as a way to fill the time between Star Trek movies and reconnect with the characters, it's pretty excellent.

I opened this comic expecting new adventures with the reboot crew, and I got a reworking of classic Trek episodes with the reboot crew. I already knew these stories, and I felt let down by the facelift.

Nope, not my cup of tea.

It's extremely distracting that both eye and hair colour change all the time - and not in a way that could be explained by the different types of light on various settings.
Also it's kinda ... well, boring. Of course one knows that the plots are stolen from TOS before reading it, as it was announced, but there are really very few changes to it, although most main characters have a completely different set of character traits in AOS that SHOULD make a difference. And the few changes are ... well, Spuhura is and will always be nonsense as Roddenberry made clear that Spock/Kirk is an issue. So using that as a plot device is a punch in the guts for classic Trek.

(Apart from changing colours again and again throughout the story, the artwork is fine, btw. That was actually the best one could say about this Graphic Novel.)

So, I got caught up in a little graphic novel whirlwind there for a moment. Finished off The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen in a morning....and read Star Trek, Vol 1 by Mike Johnson last night. Hadn't planned on reading the Star Trek, but my husband just got in the mail yesterday, left it out on the desk near the computer, and before I knew it I had it all read. No big plans for reviewing this--so I'll just give you a quickie.

The graphic novel is based in the new re-booted Star Trek universe and occurs post-Star Trek movie 2009. But no new stories--just a retelling of two episodes--"Where No Man Has Gone Before" and "The Galileo Seven"--from the new universe view-point. Decently done (and kudos to the Star Trek graphic novelist/illustrator for not sexing it up like League). I think Johnson has written the "new" characters just right in these episodes. However, I must say that if I were into graphic novels (which I'm not really), I'd be hoping for new stories in the future and not a steady diet of re-hashed TV episodes. Let's go somewhere new...somewhere "where no trek has gone before." Okay? Three stars--for Trek love, good story re-telling, and good graphics.

A bit of a letdown from the movies

This comic felt like not much happened. It took forever for each story to reach its end, and neither ending was satisfying

It's decent. I like decent! This comic has got purdy drawings of the hot people from the movie. I'm so much more a fan of the reboot than any other star trek franchise. I can't wait for the sequel. Benedict Cumberbatch OMG. OMG will there be comics with Benedict Cumberbatch in them? I'll buy all the toys too. Please please please make me ridiculous stuff to buy. I even ate Burger King to get toys and glasses. BURGER KING! That food is disgusting and I bought it and ate it for the opportunity to have merchandise. I'm totally gonna be so into only the reboot and call myself a trekkie and irritate my traditional trekker friends and family.

I'm such a blasphemer! it's gonna be so much fun

and then when the cumberbabes are finished with star trek we will move into Tolkien fandom bwahahahahahahah!

This graphic novel embodies the characters from the film well. The Enterprise is on a rescue mission for another ship that ends up becoming very complicated. Kirk leads the mission while trusting Spock with command of the ship. I appreciated seeing how despite Spock and Kirk being very different in terms of personality, their morals align where it matters. Spock and Kirk are both willing to put themselves at risk for the safety of their crew. Kirk trusting his crew with Spock is also a sign of goodwill. At the end when he gives Uhura and Spock time alone I think it's another sign of how their friendship will become more developed in future films. The ending to this story is very heavy and emotional affecting Kirk the most. I was not expecting it to be so dark, but I think it only adds to the stakes in a good way. The events of the plot help motivate emotional maturity on Kirk's part which I'm sure will carry over into the next film. I have yet to watch the second film because I wanted to read the graphic novels leading up to it first. I am looking forward to watching it soon after reading this, though.
