This book was a lot of fun! The world-building and characters were compelling, and the plot kept me entertained. It was super predictable, but that's what you get for reading a retelling. I really enjoyed the pacing of this book, as it felt like something important was happening on almost every page. At times, there was so much happening that I would forget about an element, and then it would pop back up in the plot. I look forward to see where all these plot points are going to go.

I read this back in 2012/2013, I personally think this is a great book for middle school students and/or those beginning to read fantasy/sci-fiction

one thing that i really loved with this book is how the male mc is written. usually in YA if the prince is one of the mc’s he’s usually a stuck up and full of himself but it was the complete opposite with Kai. You can see how he deals with his difficult situation and it isn’t in a romanticized way, more so the ugly truth. 

His attraction towards cinder is a bit sudden but i’m choosing to see it as a consequence of his situation and his need to find someone to release his emotions on to that isnt royalty or working for them.

I think I really do just have a problem getting my brain to adjust the the new conditions of an SFF universe, because on this second read through I enjoyed the book so much more, no longer being unfamiliar with the setting and vocabulary. I need to remember this and just push through in the future.

A pandemic that causes nearly death threatens the world. The plot takes place under the looming threat of war, centering on trying to prevent the war. Main character is an orphan, living in an abusive adoptive family.

At various points in the book, main character and other character are imprisoned, subjected to mind control, and manipulated into harming themselves. Two characters die from the pandemic, one in squalid conditions.

Book maintains a relatively lighthearted tone throughout, with moments of darkness and grotesqueness.
