This is definitely a poorly aged story. Bringing up a child's fertility after a "trans" joke is weird and quite frankly, distasteful. I appreciate how fans have completely ignored Cinder as European and have instead claimed her as Asian. As for the Asian "influences" of this book I wouldn't consider this hodge podge and mixing of several different cultures anything to get excited about. Oddly both fast paced and a little info dumpy at times.

Finished part one in an hour. I got sucked in so fast, I wasn't expecting to care about the side characters right away. The plot was expected but still had its own uniqueness from the fairytale retelling. Finished the book in less than 24 hours and desperately want to get my hands on the next book.

I think I really do just have a problem getting my brain to adjust the the new conditions of an SFF universe, because on this second read through I enjoyed the book so much more, no longer being unfamiliar with the setting and vocabulary. I need to remember this and just push through in the future.

A pandemic that causes nearly death threatens the world. The plot takes place under the looming threat of war, centering on trying to prevent the war. Main character is an orphan, living in an abusive adoptive family.

At various points in the book, main character and other character are imprisoned, subjected to mind control, and manipulated into harming themselves. Two characters die from the pandemic, one in squalid conditions.

Book maintains a relatively lighthearted tone throughout, with moments of darkness and grotesqueness.
